Hi,

I've written a web article entitled "Getting Started in Wetplate Collodion Photography" that has just been published on the unblinkingeye.com website.  Have a look.

Thanks to everyone on this forum who actually helped me get started and also to those who later helped me straighten some things out.

Joe

Nice job Joe!
Thanks for helping me along a couple of months ago on APUG. Now you can just point people toward your article.... :D
I was just making some new gear this weekend and ended up making a new helper tray. I'm gonna try the hole in the bottom but can't figure out how to make the hole! I just know this stuff tends to crack on me....So any hints on how to make that hole in the helper tray??
Thanks
Scott

Thanks Scott,

I just use a forstner drill bit in a drill press and take it slow.

Thanks for the tip Joe. I used a forstner bit but did it by hand. It took awhile but no cracks...

For those who are interested in the process and haven't as yet begun, Joe Smigiel will be leading a beginning Wet Plate Collodion workshop this June 23rd and 24th at my Northern Michigan place near Cross Village. The workshop is limited to 6 people and the fee will include all chemicals, materials and gear. Your own 4x5 camera will be a plus, but not required. I'll be assisting Joe and we will have 2 mobile darkrooms to work from enabling much hands on for everyone involved.

More info and Registration Here

This will be back to back with our annual Photographer's Gathering which begins on June 25th and runs to the 29th. If interested in an intensive week of photography and good times, check us out!

Thanks, Bill Schwab
