Greetings,

I wanted to post a quick note and a couple of "snaps" of the COMPLETED World Wet Plate Collodion Day Book!

It's an 8" x 10" book with 92 pages. There are 51 artists/photographers, three continents and 13 countries represented with 82 images! Those are some amazing numbers! Be very proud if you participated!

As you all know, this is for the Archer project - I'm checking some prices for printing right now. If I can get better quality for the same price as Blurb or other ODP shops, I'm going to have a run of 100 or 200 of these printed. My goal is to have them printed (good quality - like my new book, same paper, same printer) at ~$25 per book. That would put the price point at ~$35.00 for buyers - I think that's a "win-win" for everyone. We'll see.

Right now, I'm looking at $29.95 (USD) for 8" x 10" soft cover (color) per unit at Blurb and $23.50 at Lulu for an 8.5" x 11" (would have to rework it - NOT! and I don't like Lulu's paper/printing).

We need to raise a significant amount to do the Archer thing (not sure but it will be in the 3K - 5K range) so we are coming up with a price point at about $10 - $12 above the printing/shipping cost per book. We want this to be completely transparent. When we have all of the numbers, I'm going to post all of it.

The book will be ready shortly after I resolve the aforementioned price/quality issues.

can we get hard cover if we like?

also,  several people have had quality issues with blurb (my brother being one)  so have you held a copy from them in your hands?

thanks again.  anxiously waiting to buy.

It depends on where I end up printing them. If I use my publisher, no, hardcover won't be an option unless there is a huge demand. If I use Blurb (and I'm hearing bad things about them), it might be.

No, I haven't had anything printed yet. The book was just completed yesterday. At these prices, I wouldn't get too anxious about perfection. These will not not be spot-varnished, tri-tone prints. It will be printed on demand - there is no budget for "coffee table" books., but we'll do what we can.

I have recently purchased Sanders McNews Blurb book and felt the quality was better than anything I have seen from Lulu.  A print run from a known printer may well be the best bet in terms of cost/quality balance but obviously requires an intial outlay.

Thanks again for all the hard work Quinn.  I'd say pick a publishing method you find best, I'm sure you've seen reviews of the qualities of various POD sites.  Some are slightly better.

I look forward to getting a couple and I'll advertise where I can.

YES,  sanders book is nice.  i just wanted to give the heads up.  while i am not saying that they need to be perfect you do not want any big surprises.  my brother has had some trouble and if you check the LF forums you can read about Frank Petronios trial and tribulations when i comes to blurb.  a qucik order just to see how they do is what i was suggesting.

either way i am in.

Thanks everyone. This is exciting and I can't wait to offer it - will make a great holiday gift! Yes, there will be one every year from here out.

I'll order one (from where ever I end up getting them printed) before I release it to the public. I've used Blurb and have been satisfied with the results. There's a lot to be said about understanding the printing world, Photoshop and PDFs. Blurb has a recipe and you need to follow that closely for good results.

The bright spot here is that your reference said, "If I shot nothing but color I would be all over Blurb like mad. I may end up submitting toned CMYK files (apply a subtle Hue/Saturation "Colorize" command to every neutral image) if they can't resolve this to my satisfaction."

All of the images in this book are toned CMYK files (but they vary in color from whatever was submitted) - that should help a lot.

I'm a graphic designer and have made many "real" books, brochures, magazines, etc that printed on true presses.

For my wedding album we did one of these digital books through MPIX. I couldn't believe how good it looked.

Just fyi.
