Subject: Wet Plate Day: The Book Is Almost Ready To Publish
Date Posted: 22 July 2009 at 04:55

I'm spending every free hour I have to work on the World Wet Plate Day book. It's almost there!

There are major discrepancies between who's on the site (wetplateday.org) and who's sent me images for the book/catalog. I need to resolve this ASAP!

Please take a look at the excerpt (PDF) of the TOC - let me know if something needs to be sorted out.

On another note, doesn't it look sweet?!! I think you'll be very pleased when you see this in your hand - this is something we all can be very proud of. Thank you for your participation!

I cannot wait to touch it:)

Oh there should be:

Sitkiewicz Michał ... Toruń, Poland

instead of

Sitkiewicz Michal ... Torun, Poland

Only 2 polish letters at the end of my name and name of my city.

Regards, Michał

Thank you (everyone). It's my pleasure to do it. This is a mockup of the cover (all of the way open - nothing on the spine) - it’s an 8.5″ x 8.5″ full color, perfect bound book - almost 100 pages.

HUGE compliments to you for your tremendous efforts and of course to all that contributed as well! I see it as bein' one of those books you stumble upon with the tattered cover and well worn pages and you soon find out why! That's just awesome!

Thanks Stefan. This refers to my first post. It seems there was MAJOR confusion about how this worked.

I guess people thought if they uploaded photos to the web site (wetplateday.org) that they would be in the book. That's NOT the case. They missed http://www.wetplateday.org/wpd_base_fr.php?p=4 - the link about the book and my posts here about sending me HIGH RES photos, releases, and additional information.

We/I didn't make the assumption (nor did we have high res images and the other info) that everyone who made images that day wanted them published in a book. Maybe that was a bad assumption. However, I don't have the time to track down people who made plates on May 2 but didn't submit for the book or people that made plates on May 2 and didn't post to the site. And ask if they wanted to submit or not for the book.

I took the time this morning to separate the people that are on the site, but didn't submit. There were 55 that made plates and uploaded to the site. I have 43 for the book. Again, some didn't submit for the site and sent me images, don't let the numbers fool you (or drive you insane).

Here are the MIA:

Will Dunniway
John Fobes
Jo Gane
N.W. Gibbons
Bryan Hiott
Steve Ingram
Tsuyoshi Ito
Andrew La Roche
Phil Nesmith
Tim Parson
Ed Ross
Barry Schmetter
Ichigo Sugawara
Jan Vogtschmidt
Masakazu Yasuda

If you want to be in the book (and I want you in), please http://www.wetplateday.org/wpd_base_fr.php?p=4 - go here and follow these instructions . I can regroup and add you, but please do this ASAP - let's make August 1 the FINAL DAY. Okay?

Also, if you don't want to be in the book, that's okay, too - no problem.

I hope this makes sense.

Katie has just sent me this info - I thought I had missed the deadline for the book and didn't want to be a pain by sending mine in late, but if the deadline is today, I shall send mine over when I get back from work - thanks for the extension and inclusion! I don't get on the forum enough these days!!

I will get all info off to you - including high res scan - ASAP.

I'm glad you asked Rene. The book will be finished sometime in the next week. I had so many people that either missed the deadline, or didn't understand the procedure, I had to scrap the original work and start over again (with some help) with a new layout. The page count changed and the TOC, etc.

Right now, the book is an 8x10, full color, perfect bound piece and it's about 100 pages - I asked a good friend to write a foreword for it. She did a wonderful job.

Everyone involved should be VERY proud of this work. I feel like I know you all better, too. It's interesting when you spend a lot of time with other people's work, it's a good thing.

One final note:  I hope we can get the word out and move some of these books. Every penny, literally every cent, beyond the cost of printing the book will go toward the Archer project. And it's going to take a lot of book sales to make it happen (but we can do it). Please keep that in mind as you purchase and tell others about this project and book. It's a great cause and there's no one profiting from it except Archer and every photographer that made images on May 2, 2009.

I am so pumped up about this.
So far this year, I've been in a big-budget movie playing the fiddle, recorded my first CD with a band this week and now I'll have pictures in a book. A Trifecta!

I'm anxious to see the book too.  A good fiddler is a joy to listen to, nice to know you play Bruce.  I attempt the mandolin and guitar...

great stuff!  great work everyone thanks.

a few mionor inquires.  where can we link to to give other s an idea on the book?  i know we could send people to the blurb page but is there anywhere else we can link to so people get an idea on what and why  the book is.  i just looked http://www.wetplateday.org/wpd_base_fr.php?p=4 - at this "book" page on the wet plate day site.  it seems to be geared more towards us making images and not about what the book is from other interested parties.  oh,  and the text on that page should now read "8x10 full color book" as opposed to the 8.5x6.5.

i just think that it would be good to have a nice concise page to send to family friends and other artists that they can go and get an idea about what the is book is about and what the cause is.  now if this will be handled on the blurb page that is great but it may be better to have something so us hacks (ME) are not required to make a presentation of the book individually.  hope this makes sense.

The Wet Plate Day Book is finished. There are a couple of adjustments to do on the cover (for printing) and some tweaking on the Foreword - but for all intents and purposes, it's done.

Here's the caveat; I'm leaving for Sweden and won't have it available until a few days after I return. So, look for it to be available between the 9th and 12th of September - I'll post an announcement and the word will spread (I hope).

It's here! The FedEx man woke me up this morning with a slam of the screen door and a press of the doorbell. After sleepily trying to remember what my husband and I were expecting to arrive in the mail, I opened the door and found the box from Blurb.

In short, the book looks great and the images in it are beautiful and inspiring. It's very exciting seeing my words in print, too. This collaborative project is a one-of-a-kind testament to Archer's photographic process and to the artists still using wet plate collodion today. It's also a great addition to your CV if you had your work in it!

I was really excited to be able to hold this book in my hands this morning and see all the amazing work that is inside. My husband even woke up enough to share in my excitement as we looked through the book for the first time together. (Thanks dear!)

Hey, if anyone needs a willing photographic subject, I'm available. I'd be proud to collaborate with any one of the artists involved in this project. Sorry, though, I don't do nudes. ;-)

Here are some images I took of the book ...

Both Quinn and I had ordered copies of the book after Quinn had uploaded it - that way we would have a copy from a USA and EU printer. Quinn wanted to be sure that the reproduction looked as good as it could given the amount of time and effort he had made in ensuring that the tonal reproduction was accurate. I guess it is and we and FSA Memorial are open for business :)

I'm just getting to this (morning). Caron wrote me yesterday and told me she had received a copy - she was the "test" stateside. As Carl said, we both ordered here in Europe. Mine won't arrive for a while and I know people want to get these so last night, I asked Caron to post her snaps of the book.

From her images, it looks great. I hope that holds true (and it should) for every copy. I'll make a sticky post with a URL right now.

You can go here, too:  http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/891063 - http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/891063
